Prodimex told schoolchildren from the Voronezh region about sugar production

July 13
Recently, high-school students from the “Yunost” work-and-recreation camp, which operates at Zabolotovskaya Secondary School in the Voronezh region, visited the Olkhovatsky Sugar Combine, part of Prodimex Group. At the plant they saw the entire sugar production process.

Before heading to the workshops, the students went through an important stage of getting to know the enterprise: an occupational safety engineer gave a detailed safety briefing. This helped the children understand how seriously the combine takes employee safety and compliance with rules — an approach that is especially instructive for future engineers and technologists.

Oksana Martyanova, Deputy Director for General Affairs, told them about the proud history of the enterprise, which is already more than 190 years old. Over these years the plant has gone through various stages: from the first coal-fired production to large-scale modernization. In recent decades a whole set of repair and equipment-renewal work has been carried out at the enterprise, making it possible to manage process operations at a modern level.

Incidentally, a molasses-processing workshop has been built at the plant: valuable substances are obtained from this by-product of sugar production. It was here that Russia first mastered the production of betaine — a substance rich in amino acids. It is used in medicine, cosmetics and in the production of animal feed.

The tour of the enterprise continued through a wide variety of the plant’s divisions. The students visited the laboratory, where product quality is carefully checked at every stage, and saw in practice how quality standards work. They then visited the finished-product workshop, where they saw with their own eyes what the result of a large technological cycle looks like.

An important moment of the tour was getting to know the sugar syrup processing. The schoolchildren saw from the inside how operators work and how an automated process is built: numerous sensors, a clear sequence of stages and constant monitoring of parameters. For the high-school students this was an excellent opportunity to think about the knowledge and skills needed to work in the sugar industry: from chemistry and engineering to process management and production economics.

The students expressed sincere thanks to the management and staff of the Olkhovatsky Sugar Combine for the educational tour and the warm welcome.
