Agroinvestor: Seed transformation
Over the next 10 years the global seed market could more than double in value terms, experts forecast. Russia may also increase its volumes, as the country is tasked with expanding agro-industrial output, including crop production, by 25% by 2030 relative to 2021. Growth in output directly increases demand for high-quality seeds. At the same time, some analysts note that the domestic seed-breeding industry is growing even faster than the global one.
At Prodimex, varieties for purchase are selected based on the results of field demonstration trials conducted every year. “We pay attention to a variety’s resistance to diseases, the quality indicators of the harvest over the years, and the variety’s demand on the market,” lists the agroholding’s CEO Viktor Aleksakhin. Once the list of desired varieties is determined, a supplier is chosen. The main requirements are the price of the goods, payment terms and delivery procedure, confirmation from the producer that the declared volumes are available at a given distributor, and the quality of the seeds sold (germination, 1000-seed weight, purity). All of the above must comply with GOST.
As for market development trends, the company is very interested in developments in the digitalization of seed production, Aleksakhin says. This area makes it possible to control seed quality, forecast yields and optimize agricultural processes. In addition, much attention is paid to introducing artificial intelligence in agriculture, which in the future will make it possible to forecast the harvest quickly and more accurately, taking a wide range of factors into account.
Prodimex specialists are also interested in developments focused on the main requirements for varieties: high resistance to diseases and pests, adaptability of the variety, conditions for obtaining a high yield of stable quality, and a wider variety of cultivars with different growing seasons and uses.
